Steel wire prices down by 20 percent

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Prices of steel wires have gone down by nearly 20 percent in the last six weeks due to a fall in demand, a top official of the Steel Wire Manufacturers Association of India said here Wednesday.

‘The prices have dropped from Rs.55,000-Rs.60,000 ($1,100-$1,200) per tonne to Rs.45,000-Rs.50,000 ($900-$1,000) per tonne,’ said B.L. Jajodia, chairman of Steel Wire Manufacturers Association of India.

The export of steel wires, used in the infrastructure industry, dropped last financial year to 73,000 tonnes from 300,000 tonnes the year before in 2006-07.

‘This year we expect to export 100,000 tonnes,’ he said.

Talking about the 10 percent exemption of export duty announced by the government on steel wire, Jajodia said government should do away with the duty as this is resulting in price escalation of the product and the exporters are loosing established markets abroad.

The total value of the steel wire industry is estimated to be Rs.49 billion ($1 billion).

The association is hopeful that it will collectively manufacture 1.5 million tonnes of steel wires this fiscal. There are about 64 manufacturers in this sector.

The major players in this sector are Tata Steel, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, Ramsarup Group and the Steel Authority of India Limited.

India set for maiden Moon mission

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

India was Tuesday set to launch its historic unmanned flight to the moon, the sixth to do so after the US, former Soviet Union, European Space Agency, China and Japan. The skies cleared Tuesday evening after a heavy downpur, cheering scientists counting down to the early Wednesday morning launch.

Full Coverage: Moon Mission »

As the fully-loaded 44-metre-tall 316-tonne rocket, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV C11) stood at the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, off the Andhra Pradesh coast, 80 km north of Chennai, a meteorogical officer at the spot told agencies: “Though rain is likely at the launch, there is no cyclone threat forecast”.

As the PSLV holds aloft the 1,380-kg lunar orbiter Chandrayaan, waiting for the ignition command at 6.20 a.m. Wednesday, the top brass of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) decided that “two or three hours before liftoff, met experts will analyse the weather data once again to ascertain possibility of lightning striking the rocket or the spacecraft”, the official added.

Still very much within the earth’s atmosphere, the spacecraft was sitting protected by the rocket’s 3.2-metre bulbous heat shield Tuesday evening as the weather office in Chennai also told us that the chances of a cyclone affecting the launch were slim.

“The low pressure trough is in southern Tamil Nadu, south of Pudukotai,” the Chennai weather bureau said. “It is unlikely to move north in time to affect the Chandrayaan launch.”

A confident S. Satish, director, Publications & Press Relations of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), told agencies: “Eighteen minutes into the flight the rocket will sling the spacecraft into the 255-km perigee (nearest point to earth) and 23,000 km apogee (farthest point from earth) path to script a new history in the annals of India’s space odyssey,”

From there the spacecraft will be taken into more elliptical orbits, firing its onboard motor - technically called Liquid Apogee Motor (LAM) - towards the moon, 387,000 km from the earth.

Once the spacecraft nears the moon, the LAM will be fired in reverse to slow it down to enable the moon’s gravity to capture Chandrayaan into an elliptical orbit around the lunar poles.

Thereafter the spacecraft’s orbit will be gradually lowered till it is 100 km above the moon’s surface. That is expected to happen around Nov 8.

On Nov 14 the spacecraft will eject an important piece of luggage on to the moon’s surface - the Moon Impact Probe (MIP).

The spacecraft cameras and other instruments that would do the intended tests for the next two years will be activated after that.

The 11 experimental instruments carried by the spacecraft are from different sources - five Indian, two from the US, three from the European Space Agency and one from Bulgaria - and each has a different purpose.

“Designing the spacecraft that would fit these pre-built instruments was a challenge which was overcome with Indian ingenuity,” Mylswamy Annadurai, project director, Chandrayaan, told IANS.

Indian space scientists may not face such problems in Chandrayaan-2 as they can stipulate the payload specifications.

The Indian government has sanctioned Rs.4.25 billion for the second moon mission that is expected to happen sometime in 2011.

That mission will have the Russian Federal Space Agency as a partner which will provide the moon rover.

Looking forward India may plan missions to Mars, Venus, Mercury and also an asteroid or comet flyby mission.

Genes shed light on moles’ “blindness”

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Moles are famously short-sighted thanks to disruption of genes that help to grow the lenses of their eyes, scientists said on Tuesday.

The “defects” result from genetic triggers that occur in the embryo and are not, as some have thought, a degenerative condition that starts in adulthood, they said.

Fibres that develop into the moles’ lens start to grow normally but are not completed as a result of interference of two genes called PAX6 and FOXE3.

Other genes that are central to eye development also behave abnormally, the researchers found.

Under Darwinian theory, moles and other subterranean animals forego good vision in order to accentuate sensitivity to vibrations and smell that help them survive.

The study was carried out on embryos of the Iberian mole, Talpa occidentalis, which unlike other mole species has permanently closed eyes.

The paper, led by Martin Collinson of the University of Aberdeen, northeastern Scotland, appears in the British-based open-access journal BMC Biology.

Court permits government to plead in Reliance gas dispute

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

The government was Tuesday allowed to present its position on the dispute over natural gas supplies of Reliance Industries being heard by the Bombay High Court.

The court said it had no issues in allowing the government to be a party to the matter while hearing the dispute between Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries and his younger brother, Anil Ambani’s Reliance Natural Resources.

The move comes after counsels for Reliance Natural Resources decided to withdraw their opposition and said they had no problem in the government joining the litigation.

The formal order allowing the government to join the hearing as a third party is expected to be passed by the court Wednesday.

The dispute revolves around the natural gas supply from Krishna Godavari G-D6 block over which company has the rights over the hydrocarbon asset gas and at what price.

The Anil Ambani group has claimed at least half of the 80 million standard cubic metres of gas per day envisaged from the fields off the Andhra Pradesh coast - said to be the country’s biggest source of hydrocarbons today.

The group has told the court that under a pact with Reliance Industries, the gas from the Krishna-Godavari basin has to be given to it on the same terms as the state-run NTPC, formerly National Thermal Power Corp.

The family pact records the arrangement between Anil and Mukesh Ambani as part of the demerger scheme of the Reliance group founded by their father Dhirubhai Ambani, and also notes what needed to be done in future.

Delhi beat HP by eight wickets

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Delhi defeated Himachal Pradesh by eight wickets in their U-22 C.K. Nayudu Trophy match at the St Stephen’s ground on Monday. Himachal Pradesh showed tremendous improvement in their second innings though as Vikas Sharma (73) and Rishi Dhawan (86), along with opener Minesh Thakur (50), put up a strong fight on the third day.

Dhawan stood like a barrier against the Delhi bowlers but he fell short of the triple figure and failed to save the match and the hosts earned five points. Apart from debutant Kapil Yadav’s six-wicket haul and Narender Singh’s show with bat, Delhi’s wicketkeeper-captain Rahul Yadav played an important role.

Yadav took seven catches and scored an unbeaten 25 in the second inning including five boundaries. There were a couple of disciplinary issues.

The umpires summoned Delhi’s Ankur Jhulka and Rahul Yadav at the end of the play. HT learnt that Jhulka was called for showing his bat to the umpire while Yadav was called up for over-appealing on different occasions.

Brief scores: Himachal Pradesh 106 and 291 (V. Sharma 73, R. Dhawan 86; K. Yadav 3/80) lost to Delhi 328 and 70/2 (R. Yadav 25*, N. Singh 19*).

Fatty acids in brain ‘can treat Alzheimer’s’

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Here’s some good news for those suffering from dementia — a study has found that controlling the level of a fatty acid in the brain could help treat the Alzheimer’s disease.Researchers have carried out the study and found that reducing excess levels of a fatty acid called arachidonic acid can mitigate memory problems and behavioural changes in those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

In fact, the researchers from the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease and the University of California have based their findings on an experiment on laboratory rodents, the ‘Nature Neuroscience’ journal reported.

They looked at fatty acids in the brains of normal mice and compared them with those in mice who are genetically engineered to have an Alzheimer’s-like condition.

They identified raised levels of arachidonic acid in the brains of the Alzheimer’s mice. Its release is controlled by the PLA2 enzyme. They again used genetic engineering to lower PLA2 levels in the animals, and found even a partial reduction halted memory deterioration.”The most striking change we discovered in the Alzheimer’s mice was an increase in arachidonic acid and related metabolites (products) in the hippocampus, a memory centre that is affected early and severely by Alzheimer’s disease,” co-researcher Dr Rene Sanchez-Mejia was quoted by the ‘BBC News’ portal as saying.

Added lead researcher Dr Lennart Mucke: “In general, fatty acid levels can be regulated by diet or drugs. Our results have important therapeutic implications because they suggest that inhibition of PLA2 activity might help prevent neurological impairments in Alzheimer’s disease. But a lot more work needs to be done before this novel therapeutic strategy can be tested on humans.”

Substitute of Conservatory Blinds

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

From a very long time most of us are using mostly the costly Conservatory Blinds for decreasing the heat effect in the hot summer season but the main point of concern is that they are effective to some extent but they are not much useful .Now you can solve this problem by using solar blinds in your home but these blinds are expensive than the other blinds available in the market but on other hand they are doing much better job in stopping the heat from entering the house.

These conservatory pleated binds are available in two forms as one in the form of poly carbonate roofs which is not glass. Now what is the substitute of this? One can do the best replacement with the help of pleated conservatory blinds or with the help of conservatory roof windows films. The best thing about these windows films is that, they are cheaper than the blinds and even more effective in controlling heat and harmful rays of sun from entering into the home.

There are two basic types of window films are available as one is reflective window film and the other one is coolkote window film which is available for the polycarbonate roofs and these films help to stop heat up to 81.6%.
