Indian hoteliers to promote responsible tourism

Friday, October 17th, 2008

The Indian hospitality industry will promote responsible tourism and sound environmental practices, a top industry lobby official said here Wednesday.

“The theme for the 44th Annual Convention of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) will be ‘responsible tourism’,” said FHRAI vice president Rajindera Kumar at a press meet here.

This year the convention will be held in Shanghai, China in a bid to showcase India.

“While 400,000 Indians visited China last year, only 90,000 Chinese visited India,” Kumar said, adding, “We want to correct this imbalance.”

Announcing the programme of the convention to be organised between Oct 11 and 14 next, Kumar said the aim of picking this theme was to encourage and promote environmentally sound practices in the industry.

“During the next six years, more than 1.6 billion people around the world will be visiting various destinations including India and China,” said the federation’s secretary general Harish Sud.

“We want to make sure that these tourists do not create a negative impact on the people, societies, and environments that they will be visiting,” he added.

“For the first time, our annual convention will be a carbon neutral one,” said Sunit Kothari, a member of the convention organising committee and of FHRAI’s western region executive committee.

“The FHRAI will be spending money to buy carbon credits to make the convention a carbon neutral one,” said Vinod Kala, managing director of Emergent Ventures India Pvt Ltd.

Kala’s company, also known as Evi, is a leading advisory firm offering solutions and services for clean development mechanism.

FHRAI has roped in Evi to promote clean technologies and clean practices in the hotel industry. Evi is also helping the federation to make this year’s convention carbon neutral.

How to get on the right plane?

In two days I am going to visit my brother to South Carolina and I will be taking the plane from my airport (Indianapolis).
I am 16 years old and I am nervous because I am not use to be on planes alone. I have to make a stop in Washington, DC., and I am afraid to how am I going to get my next plane. I don’t even remember how people wait, and when they know it is time to get inside the other plane. You know how the airport is BIG! I might get lost. And I do not want to be following people because what if thats their final destination.

What should I do? Any tips? I do not want to miss my plane in Washington D.C. Can you imagine that?

my advice is to pay attention to all the signs… and ask for help if you’re lost or confused. ive never been to the DC airport. but i have had to make connecting flights by myself alot in the past year (i was 18).. before u get off ur first flight to DC, the flight attendant should read off what gate the connecting flights are at. that info should also be on ur ticket as well. when u get off the plane and into the airport…. first find a tv monitor that shows arrival/departure flights, find ur flight to SC and make sure to see if its on time or delayed. i dont know if DC has shuttles or anything to get to other gates. but if it does and you’re not sure how to do that, find an airport employee asap and ask them. dont be nervous, it’s not hard once u do it the first time. dont forget to call ur brother and tell him that ur flight arrived at DC, and before u take off for SC so he has an idea of what time ull be arriving.

When you check in at your departing airport, you will be given your boarding passes for both flights. You will have the airline’s name, the time, a flight number, seat assignment number and your boarding gate number on your boarding pass. Your airline, your flight number, gate # and time will be posted on a monitor on the walls of the airport in several places. It will also tell you if it’s on time, delayed etc.

Big signs will direct you to your departing gate in Indianapolis and Washington,DC. When you get off your first plane, usually an attendant directs passengers to their next flight. Washington, D.C is a big connecting airport.

Once you get to your gate in DC, you will again see a posting of your airline, flight number and departing time.

It is scary at first, but just follow signs, NOT people. You’ll do great and coming home you’ll be a pro.

Rocking on the Land of Europa

Monday, July 7th, 2008

The best way to discover the grandeur of Europe is through European River cruise. These cruises take you to the heart and soul of the magnificent places in Europe. They will take you across a place of castles, vineyards, mountains, beautiful waters, and exposed you to a very warm culture. Big cruise ships will take you along the coasts while sails will take you to unforgettable landscapes that inspired thinkers and great artists.

One famous stop for all tourists is Italy. Italy tours can be customized according to your budget. Most find it practical to join groups. Group packages bring the costs down. A guided Italy vacation on a cruise will sound like this:

Unforgettable moments full of magic will unravel as you see the sights and culture rich places day by day– All this aboard a seemingly floating hotel. Most luxury ships that embark for a European river cruise are multi-decked with amenities such as a number of bars, spas, gyms, and rooms fit for kings and queens. You definitely don’t want to miss a European river cruise.

The Italy tours may kick off in Rome. A guided tour will lead you to the landmarks not to be missed. One must see the Basilicas, ancient ruins, arts, food, and of course souvenir shops. After Rome, head off to Savona in the region of Liguria, North Italy where the famous navigator Christopher Columbus once lived. In Savona pass by the Priamar an old fortress build during the 16th century. In this city, you can visit the famous Cappella Sistina or the Sistine Chapel.

You ride will take you to your next stop, Barcelona in Spain. This is the most extravagant and elegant city where the 1992 Summer Olympics was held. Explore with the group the old quarters built in the 1300’s, the castles, and stores where you can buy local goods. Enjoy the night in Placa Real know for its palm trees along the road which leads to the lively cafes. While in Barcelona, visit The Cathedral of the Holy Family or Sagrada Familia.

A short European river cruise like this exposes you to the life in Spain and Italy. During Italy tours like this never forget your camera to capture all the precious moments of your Spain and Italy vacation.

Tuna Fishing

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Massachusetts offers some of the best waters for Tuna Fishing. Anglers from across the country flock to this pristine location where some of the finest Blue fin Tuna are found. When trolling for tuna, you will generally use many lines with lures at various distances in the boat’s wake as it trolls at speeds of around 10 knots. The reason that you use as many lines as possible is because it imitates the look of a school of bait fish.

It is the noise from the tuna fishing charter boat’s propeller that attracts the tuna, and when they come to the surface to investigate the noise, the will hopefully see the lures and jump on. When this occurs, multiple hookups can happen. At this point the hit rod will then be put into one of two fighting chairs. The boat is then slowed and the angler is able to reel in the fish. The only drawback to troll fishing is that the movement of the boat adds to the stress of fighting the fish and it can take a good bit of muscle to finally land a giant. Another method to employ when tuna fishing mass later in the season is to tempt the fish with bait. This becomes easier as the fish start to settle in a given area.

What currency should I take on mediterranean cruise?

We are taking a 20-day Mediterranean cruise on Holland America. Should we take Euros or US Dollars?

Take some dollars, take some Euros, and maybe even British Pounds. If you go to countries, like Malta, take more euros.

In my opinion take the follow
60% euros
25% Dollars
15% Pounds

———

For everything you do while on the ship, everything will be charged to your stateroom. So, while on the ship, it’s “cashless”. At the end of the cruise, if you have any charges, you can pay them with your credit card or with cash. I believe Holland America Line operates in US dollars as the primary currency, but I can almost guarantee you that they’ll also take British Pounds and Euros, and probably also Canadian dollars.

When you’re OFF the ship, then you will need whatever currency is used in that port. Spain, France, Italy, and Greece all use the Euro now. If your cruise stops at an African port, such as in Egypt or Tunisia, then you’ll need some local currency there. I’ve found you can usually get this on-board as well. Sometimes all you need is a small amount of cash that you can obtain from a bank or ATM. You don’t need lots of cash on any cruise unless you plan to do some serious shopping.

I think a little bit of both US dollars and Euros will work for you, and you can almost always exchange money at the purser’s desk if you need it. They’ll probably sell stamps for your postcards, too. Should you need more cash than you brought from home, use a shore-based ATM instead of the one on board. The on-board ATMs usually have exorbitant fees.

You would have to know their personal email. Most crew members don’t have rccl email addresses.
And there are on average more than 900 employees per ship.
Or you can try sending it to:
