Get It Right!

If you are too meshed up with your computer, you have to keep in mind that you have to do computer recycling the right way. But, how do we actually know that we are doing the right computer disposal? Well, in every country, we have varied opinions about it. Say for example if you live in Tokyo, PC disposal goes straight to the trash. But, to some countries, computer disposal can be recycled and you can go for having it used for someone to use it usefully. If you are going to consider its functionality, it really differs because some actually prefer to do what they want to do and not all of us needs PC’s for graphic and designing but some of us just use it for merely typing things to meet several requirements. In this case, you will be able to think of the things that can actually give you the things that you will just need. So, make it a good choice to make everything be on its proper place and you will not be able to waste your PC and put it in trash while others can still use it for a good purpose.

BSE Sensex trims losses after hitting 2-yr low

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The BSE Sensex trimmed sharp early losses on Tuesday as domestic institutions came to the rescue after sentiment was hammered by the collapse of U.S. bailout plan to ease the panic in global markets.

Shares in battered ICICI Bank were among the ones that rebounded.

The bank, India’s No. 2 lender, said in a statement it had a very strong capital position and rumours that were being repeatedly circulated about its financial strength were baseless and malicious.

Many other Asian markets came off their lows as investors saw value in beated down stocks, with some still betting the U.S. Congress would eventually pass the $700 billion bailout package for its troubled financial sector.

“We are acting in line with the Asian markets,” said Amitabh Chakrabarty, president of equities at Religare Hichens Harrison. “There’s support from domestic funds, that’s why some key stocks are holding up; also some of the shorts are being covered.”

By 11:25 a.m., the 30-share BSE index was down 0.54 percent at 12,527.48, with 11 components trading in positive. It had fallen as much as 3.5 percent to its lowest in two years.

ICICI Bank was up 1.3 percent at 499.50 rupees, after falling to 458, its lowest since June 2006.

Leading explorer Oil & Natural Gas Corp rose 1.5 percent to 1,039 rupees as crude prices fell below $96 a barrel.

Lower crude prices will help reduce the subsidy bill for ONGC, which is forced to sell fuel at state-set low prices.

Traders said some domestic funds were buying to dress up their quarterly closings.

The BSE index is on course to post its smallest quarterly loss in 2008 at about 7 percent, compared with a drop of almost 14 percent in the June quarter and nearly 23 percent fall in the March quarter.

The benchmark is down about 20 percent in the financial year that began on April 1 and off 38 percent since end-2007.

SEBI said on Tuesday institutional investors were not short selling and there were no plans to tighten rules.

In the broader market, 1,823 losers were ahead of 395 gainers on volume of 80.2 million shares.

The 50-share NSE index was down 0.65 percent at 3,825.10.

Elsewhere in the region, Karachi’s 100-share index was little changed at 9,179.35, but Colombo’s All-share index lost 2 percent to 2,142.01.

Nicole Kidman credits fertile water with pregnancy, AS

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman said swimming in Australian Outback waterfalls may promote fertility and might have contributed to her unexpected pregnancy over the past year. The 41-year-old Aussie, who gave birth to daughter Sunday Rose in July, said she and six other women who swam in the waters of a small Outback town during production of the epic romance “Australia” fell pregnant.

“I never thought that I would get pregnant and give birth to a child, but it happened on this movie,” Kidman told The Australian Women’s Weekly in an exclusive interview for the magazine’s 75th anniversary edition, released Wednesday. “Seven babies were conceived out of this film and only one was a boy.

There is something up there in the Kununurra water because we all went swimming in the waterfalls, so we can call it the fertility waters now.” “Australia,” directed by Baz Luhrmann, was filmed in Kununurra, a small town in far northern Western Australia state.

The film, which follows the story of a noblewoman on a cattle drive in Australia during World War II, is due for release in November. The actress also commented on the relatively diminutive size of her baby bump throughout her pregnancy.

“I’m so lucky I’m so tall, so I carried small and also, I have to say, I had a birth that I was blessed with, a labor that was very good and a baby that was very good to me in that regard,” said Kidman, who is married to country music crooner Keith Urban and has two adopted children with ex-husband Tom Cruise. “To be given this again is a beautiful thing.

To have raised Bella and Connor since I was 25 and now to be able to do it again at 41 .

wow!”.

Wholesale prices rising at fastest pace since 1981

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Wholesale inflation surged in July, leaving prices for the past year rising at the fastest pace in 27 years, according to government data released Tuesday.

The Labor Department reported that wholesale prices shot up 1.2 percent in July, pushed higher by rising costs for energy, motor vehicles and other products. The increase was more than twice the 0.5 percent gain that economists expected.

Core prices, which exclude food and energy, rose 0.7 percent. That increase was the biggest since November 2006 and more than triple the 0.2 percent rise in core prices that had been expected.

In other economic news, the Commerce Department reported that housing construction fell in July to the lowest pace in more than 17 years. Builders broke ground on 965,000 housing units at a seasonally adjusted annual rate last month — the weakest showing since March 1991 — as the housing industry continues to struggle with falling sales and rising mortgage foreclosures.

The bad news on wholesale prices followed a report last week that consumer prices shot up by 0.8 percent in July, leaving consumer inflation rising at the fastest pace since 1991.

The July price pressures reflected in part the big surge in energy costs during the month that pushed crude oil prices to a record of $147.27 per barrel and sent gasoline pump prices to an all-time high of $4.11 per gallon.

Crude oil prices have fallen by more than $30 per barrel since then, raising hopes that the surge in inflation will soon abate.

However, the price spikes in a number of areas seen in July raised concerns that the prolonged surge in energy prices was beginning to show up more broadly throughout the economy.

Sal Guatieri, an economist at BMO Capital Markets, said he believed inflation at both the consumer and wholesale levels will remain high for another month or so but then start to decline, reflecting the large decreases already seen in crude oil and other commodities.

“A firmer dollar, retreating commodity prices and continued economic weakness should damp inflation by the fall,” he said.

Such a development would put the Federal Reserve in a severe bind. The central bank would like to keep interest rates low to give a boost to the badly lagging economy, but Fed officials may feel pressured to start raising rates in an effort to make sure inflation does not get out of control.

For July, wholesale energy prices jumped by 3.1 percent following a 6 percent gain in June. That increase reflected big jumps in the price of natural gas, home heating oil and liquefied petroleum gas, which offset a 0.2 percent dip in gasoline costs.

Food prices rose by 0.3 percent in July after a 1.5 percent surge in June. Beef prices jumped by 7.4 percent, the biggest increase in nearly four years. Milk prices shot up by 5 percent, the biggest gain in a year, while soft drink prices rose by 2.4 percent, the largest increase in four years.

Excluding energy and food, the 0.7 percent rise in core inflation reflected big gains in the prices of passenger cars and light trucks, pharmaceutical preparations and plastic products.

Cape Town’s Scenery

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

There are many beautiful things in the areas around Cape Town. The natural areas around the city are known for their beauty. If you enjoy a good look at nature’s splendor, then you’ll be quite happy with the many locations that are surprisingly close to Cape Town hotels.

The best known location would probably be Table Mountain. This is a beautiful area that’s within driving distance of Cape Town. The entire area makes up Table Mountain National Park. This scenic area is perfect for the naturalist in us all. The mountain is perfectly climbable for the more rugged people. Table Mountain has a number of trails for climbing. The view at the top is particularly gorgeous. The less athletic can just take a calm and easy cable car ride to the top.

Signal hill is another possible location. It also has trails for hiking and even a road all the way to the top. It’s a bit closer to the sea, but lacks a little of the splendor of Table Mountain. It is definitely worth the effort to most tourists though.

The part that is truly great about these mountains is their relative proximity to the city. You can take in these natural beauties and then take a relatively short drive back to the relaxation of your Cape Town accommodation. The best of both worlds.

Sony to buy Bertelsmann’s Sony BMG stake for $900M

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Sony Corp. said Tuesday it is buying Bertelsmann AG out of their 50-50 music venture Sony BMG for $900 million, giving it full ownership of a roster of artists including Alicia Keys and the increased ability to leverage music over an array of electronic devices.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant said it would pay Bertelsmann $600 million and give it all of the $600 million in cash holdings of the joint venture.

Since privately owned Bertelsmann already owned $300 million of that sum, the deal is valued at $900 million.

The move enables Sony to move more quickly as the No. 2 player in a U.S. music industry challenged by online piracy and declining album sales. It also allows the company to cut costs and make a further attempt to integrate its content on cell phones and its popular game console, the PlayStation 3.

The U.S. stock market cheered the announcement, sending Sony shares up $1.37, or 3.7 percent, to close at $38.39, slightly ahead of the 2.9 percent gain in the Dow Jones industrial average.

Analysts said it remains unclear if Sony will be able to turn around the joint venture, which has seen revenues tumble but profits improve due to cost cutting.

In 2007, it posted 278 million euros ($429 million) in operating earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization as revenue declined 28 percent to 2.9 billion euros ($4.5 billion), according to Bertelsmann’s annual report.

Cost cutting, including a 5 percent staff cut between 2006 and 2007, helped boost earnings slightly from a year earlier, even as physical media sales slumped and the company sold off its BMG Music Publishing unit, the report said.

Pali Research analyst Richard Greenfield said the acquisition valued Sony BMG, to be renamed Sony Music Entertainment Inc., at $1.8 billion, just more than four times its annual earnings power.

“It’s already a pretty low valuation,” Greenfield said. “It shows you how the music business remains a very questionable business over the next couple of years.”

Sony has made moves recently to merge its content with its electronic goods.

In June, the company said it would deliver movies and TV shows to Bravia TVs via the Internet before the content is released on DVD, starting with “Hancock” from Sony Pictures.

The company also launched a digital download service for its PlayStation 3 game console last month, and has previously sold the console with a free Blu-ray copy of the James Bond movie, “Casino Royale.”

It has a further opportunity to leverage its music properties with its “Singstar” competitive karaoke game on the PlayStation 3. Other companies have profited handsomely from such breakaway music games as “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band.”

Soleil-Hudson Square Research analyst Daniel Ernst said an attempt to use its music properties in the high-margin games business was a step in the right direction.

“That’s the future,” he said, adding it was unclear if the decision to take over Sony BMG would be fruitful. “It remains to be seen if it could be valuable or not.”

Music industry players are expecting cutbacks although not as drastic as those implemented when the joint venture was formed in August 2004.

Music lawyer Gary Stiffelman, whose Los Angeles-based firm Ziffren, Brittenham represents Sony BMG artists Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Celine Dion and Yo-Yo Ma, said he feared lesser known artists might be hurt.

“At the top we don’t feel the artists are much affected,” he said. “The artists that are likely to suffer are going to be the ones on the margin.”

Once the deal, which is subject to regulatory approvals, is complete, Sony Music Entertainment Inc. will be comprised of several music labels, including Arista Records, Columbia Records, Epic Records, J Records, Jive Records, RCA Records and Zomba.

Its artists will include Celine Dion, Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake and Usher, among others.

The deal is not subject to approval by Sony shareholders and is expected to close before the end of the year.

Bertelsmann will take over a limited amount of selected European music catalog assets from Sony BMG, which represents about $20 million, or less than 1 percent of Sony BMG’s revenue last year.

Sony BMG is the second-largest music company in the United States with a roughly 25 percent share of the market, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which tracks sales of albums, singles and ringtones.

Universal Music Group, a unit of Vivendi SA, is No. 1 with 31 percent, while Warner Music Group Corp. is third with 21 percent and EMI Group PLC is in fourth about 9 percent.
